Tennis is an Olympic sport played between two players or two teams of two with a racket and ball. Players try to throw a hollow rubber ball over the net (net) to the opponent’s court (court) with their rackets. The player with the most points within the rules wins.
The game, which is based on a game played by hand in medieval France, but started to be played in England in the 1800s, very close to today, spread primarily in English-speaking countries. Today, tennis is an Olympic sport and has players of all levels, ages and countries.
Tennis is played on a rectangular flat court, usually on a concrete (hard), clay (earth), grass or wooden surface. In professional tennis, the courts have to be built according to certain dimensions.
A professional tennis court is rectangular and measures 23.77m (78 feet) long by 10.97m (36 feet) wide. The width for singles competition is 8.23 m (27 feet).
The court is divided in the middle by a net suspended from a steel wire or cord passing over two 1.07 meters (3 1/2 feet) high poles. The net should be taut, fill completely between the posts, and be woven so tightly that the ball cannot pass. The median height of the net is 0.914 m (3 feet), and the height and tension of the net is adjusted by a “middle band” that is fixed to the ground by passing over the steel wire holding the net.
